Jaycee Kidnap Accused ‘Raped Child Before’

The alleged kidnapper of Jaycee Lee Dugard was accused of drugging and raping another girl more than 30 years ago, police have revealed.
Phillip Garrido, who is accused of abducting Jaycee in 1991 and holding her prisoner for 18 years, was charged with attacking a schoolgirl in a separate case in 1972.
But the 58-year-old was released after the charges against him were dropped because the child refused to testify in court.
He and another man had met the 14-year-old girl and a friend at a library in Antioch, California, police lieutenant Leonard Orman said.
“They got into a vehicle with Mr Garrido and were provided barbiturates… she ended up at a motel with Mr Garrido,” he said.
“She basically awoke and found herself there and was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted at that time.”
Police investigating Jaycee’s abduction did not know about the previous case until the alleged victim, who is now in her 50s, contacted them after seeing Garrido’s picture in the media.
Asked if he believed Garrido may have claimed other victims, Mr Orman replied: “Other victims? I think there’s a good chance of that, yes.”
Four years after he was accused of raping the 14-year-old, Garrido kidnapped casino worker Katie Callaway Hall in Reno, Nevada, and sexually assaulted her.
He later served 11 years in prison for the crime but was granted parole in August 1988, despite receiving a 50-year jail term.
Elsewhere, Jaycee’s aunt has spoken about how the kidnap victim spent her first days of freedom reconnecting with her family.
The 29-year-old and her two daughters have been in a “secluded place” with relatives, Tina Dugard said.
“We spent time sharing memories and stories and getting to know each other again.
“Jaycee remembers all of us; she is especially enjoying getting to know her little sister who was just a baby when Jaycee was taken.
“Not only have we laughed and cried together but we’ve spent time sitting quietly, taking pleasure in each other’s company.”
Ms Dugard described Jaycee’s daughters, aged 11 and 15, by Garrido as clever and articulate with a bright future ahead of them.
“Although they have no formal education, they are certainly educated,” she said at a news conference.
“Jaycee did a truly amazing job with the limited resources and education that she herself had, and we are so proud of her.”
