Sex attack man bids to overturn conviction

THE man at the centre of the Kerry sex attack controversy has formally lodged an appeal against his conviction.
This emerged as his victim spoke in harrowing terms of her ordeal at a formal press conference and on RTE radio.
Danny Foley (35) sought to have his conviction thrown out less than 48 hours after he was jailed for five years for the horrific assault of a 22-year-old woman in his hometown of Listowel.
He had hoped to lodge the appeal last Thursday, the day after a judge accused him of attempting to “demean and denigrate” his victim through “revolting assertions and odious language” during his evidence.
However, Foley, of Meen, Listowel, Co Kerry, was unable to lodge his appeal until he met with the governor of Cork Prison on Friday. His family now hope that his appeal will be heard early in the New Year.
Big freeze claims its first victim

THE weekend’s freezing weather claimed its first victim yesterday when a young man was killed after his car skidded and hit a wall less than a mile from his home.
The tragedy came as the country was plunged into a big freeze with snow and ice leaving many roads in a treacherous condition yesterday
David O’Halloran (26) lost control of his car after skidding on ice in his hometown of Thurles, Co Tipperary.
He was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred just before noon. His death brings to 235 the number to have died on the roads so far this year.
Youth injured in paramilitary-style attack

A 17-year-old youth has been shot in what the PSNI described as a paramilitary-style attack in Dunmurry on the outskirts of south Belfast.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle and another injury to the arm when four masked men forced their way into the house at Glasvey Drive last night.
No-one else was injured in the incident.
Illusionist Copperfield accused of sex assault and threats

ILLUSIONIST David Copperfield is being sued by a woman who claims he sexually assaulted and threatened to kill her.
The alleged victim, from Seattle in the US, is seeking undisclosed damages for emotional distress, false misrepresentation and false imprisonment in relation to an incident she claimed occurred on the magician’s private island in the Bahamas.
